During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
