British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
